About this project

I’m fascinated by the way columns affect space. They create pockets of invisibility even as they create vast open spaces that are impossible without their load-bearing capability. I wanted a way to similarly explore space, but couldn’t build a cathedral so I disconnected the from its load-bearing responsibilities and instead let it hover between ceiling and floor.

It appears like a weight-bearing column at first glance, but then you realize it’s not connected on either end, and despite that, it still creates those pockets of invisibility.

This is the first in what will be a larger collection of columns that can be moved from one space to another and adapted to each space as fits best.
